If you’re camping off-grid and want to keep your phone charged, the good news is you don’t need a huge solar setup.

Most campers only need a 10W to 20W solar panel to reliably charge a smartphone.

But the best size depends on how fast you want to charge, weather conditions, and whether you’re using a power bank.

Quick Answer

10W solar panel → Works in direct sunlight, slower charging

15W–20W solar panel → Faster and more reliable (best choice)

Power bank + solar panel → Most efficient setup

👉 Best overall setup: 15W–20W panel paired with a power bank

Our Comfort-First Camping Style

How Much Power Does a Phone Need?

Most modern smartphones have batteries between 3,000 and 5,000 mAh, which equals roughly 10–20 watt-hours (Wh) of energy.

In ideal conditions:

A 10W panel can charge a phone in about 3–5 hours

A 15W–20W panel can do it faster and handle less-than-perfect sunlight

However, real-world camping conditions (clouds, shade, panel angle) reduce efficiency—so having extra wattage helps.

Choosing the Right Solar Panel Size

10W Solar Panel

Lightweight and compact

Works well in full, direct sunlight

Slower and less reliable if conditions change

Best for: Minimalists and short trips

15W–20W Solar Panel (Recommended)

Faster charging times

Performs better in partial sun or cloudy conditions

More consistent output throughout the day

Best for: Most campers, especially families or multi-day trips

Why You Should Use a Power Bank

Instead of charging your phone directly from the panel, it’s much more effective to:

Charge a power bank during the day

Charge your phone from the power bank anytime

Benefits:

Stores energy for nighttime use

Prevents charging interruptions from clouds

More stable and faster charging

👉 This setup is especially helpful when camping with kids or relying on your phone for navigation or safety.

Real-World Tips for Better Charging

Angle your panel toward the sun for maximum output

Avoid shade—even partial shade reduces efficiency significantly

Charge during peak sunlight hours (10 AM – 4 PM)

Use short, high-quality cables to reduce power loss

Can You Use a Smaller Solar Panel?

Yes—but it’s not ideal.

5W panels may maintain battery life but struggle to fully charge a phone

You’ll need perfect sunlight and lots of time

👉 For most campers, anything under 10W will feel frustrating.

Best Setup for Camping Families

If you’re camping with kids or multiple devices, go with:

20W solar panel

10,000–20,000 mAh power bank

This gives you enough capacity to:

Charge multiple phones

Handle cloudy weather

Keep devices running for longer trips

FAQ

How long does it take to charge a phone with a solar panel?

With a 10W–20W panel, it typically takes 3 to 6 hours in direct sunlight, depending on conditions.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes, but output drops significantly. A larger panel (15W–20W) helps compensate.

Can I charge my phone directly from a solar panel?

You can, but it’s not recommended. A power bank provides more stable and reliable charging.

Bottom Line

For most camping trips, a 15W to 20W solar panel paired with a power bank is the best way to keep your phone charged.

It’s simple, reliable, and gives you peace of mind—without adding much weight to your gear.

Camping looks very different depending on who you ask.

For some people, it’s about roughing it, packing light, and seeing how little sleep they can survive on. For others, it’s about luxury RV resorts with outdoor TVs and margarita machines. And for a lot of families—ours included—it’s somewhere in the middle.

We camp because we want to slow down, not because we want to suffer.

We’re a busy family. Our regular life is packed with work, school, schedules, and a never-ending to-do list. When we carve out time to camp, we want it to feel like a break—not another project that leaves us more exhausted than when we arrived.

That’s why our camping style has evolved into something very specific over the years:
comfort-first, money-conscious, lake-loving camping using both tents and an RV.

This post explains how and why we camp the way we do, what matters to us (and what absolutely doesn’t), and who this blog is really for. If you’ve ever thought, “I love camping, but I’m tired and I don’t want to be miserable,” you’re probably our people.

Why We Camp at All (Because It’s Not About Being Hardcore)

Let’s start here: we don’t camp to prove anything.

We’re not trying to win an award for toughest campers or impress strangers with how minimalist we can be. We camp because:

We love sitting by the lake for hours with nowhere else to be

We love campfires that stretch late into the evening

We sleep better when the days are simple and outside

We like waking up without alarms and drinking coffee slowly

Camping is one of the few ways we can fully unplug from daily life while still being together as a family.

But here’s the thing no one talks about enough: camping is only relaxing if it doesn’t become a logistical nightmare.

When camping turns into:

terrible sleep

constant discomfort

endless setup and teardown

forgotten essentials

overspending on gear that doesn’t help

…it stops being fun very quickly.

Our entire approach is built around avoiding that outcome.

Comfort Is Not a Dirty Word

Somewhere along the line, “comfort” became a bad word in camping circles.

You’ll see comments online like:

“That’s not real camping.”

“You might as well stay home.”

“Camping isn’t supposed to be comfortable.”

We couldn’t disagree more.

For us, comfort is what makes camping sustainable. It’s the reason we go more than once a year. It’s the reason we come home refreshed instead of cranky.

Comfort, to us, means:

Sleeping well enough to enjoy the next day

Sitting in chairs that don’t wreck our backs

Having enough light to move around safely at night

Being warm (or cool) enough to actually relax

Eating simple meals without a mountain of dishes

Here’s how we get a good night’s sleep while camping

Notice what comfort doesn’t mean:

Luxury for luxury’s sake

Buying the most expensive version of everything

Overpacking just because we can

Comfort is about reducing friction, not adding stuff.

Why We Do Both Tent Camping and RV Camping

A lot of people feel like they have to pick a side: tent or RV.

We don’t. And honestly, that flexibility has made camping far more enjoyable for us.

Tent Camping: When We Want Simplicity and the Outdoors

We still love tent camping. There’s something about being closer to nature that’s hard to beat, especially at the lake.

We tend to choose tent camping when:

The weather forecast is solid

The trip is shorter

We want a simpler setup

We’re feeling energized instead of burned out

But our tent setup has evolved a lot. We’re not sleeping on the ground “just because.” We prioritize:

real sleep systems

easy setup

enough space to move around

If tent camping means waking up sore and grumpy, we’re doing it wrong—for us.

RV Camping: When We Need Rest to Actually Happen

Our RV is our secret weapon for busy seasons of life.

We choose RV camping when:

We’re exhausted before we even leave

The trip is longer

Weather might be unpredictable

We want guaranteed good sleep

Sleeping in the trailer at night means:

real mattresses

temperature control

quick bedtime routines

less setup and teardown

It allows us to enjoy the outside during the day and actually rest at night—which is the whole point.

This hybrid approach lets us camp more often, not less.

When we need to decide whether to camp in a tent or the RV camper, we follow this guide to help us choose: Tent vs RV Camping for Families: How to Choose the Right Option for Every Trip

The Lake Is the Center of Everything

If there’s one non-negotiable for us, it’s water.

We spend most of our camping time by the lake:

sitting in chairs

watching the water

swimming, floating, wading

doing absolutely nothing productive

Lake days slow everything down. They don’t require planning or entertainment schedules. Everyone can do their own thing without needing constant supervision or structure.

Because of this, our gear, routines, and campground choices are all built around lake life:

chairs that handle sand and water

towels and shoes that dry quickly

simple meals that don’t interrupt the day

shade and lighting that make it comfortable to stay out longer

Camping isn’t about filling every hour. It’s about creating space to rest.

Being Busy Changes How You Camp

This is something we don’t see talked about enough.

When you’re busy—really busy—your energy becomes a limited resource. Camping can’t demand more energy than it gives back.

That means:

We care a lot about setup time

We don’t bring things that create extra work

We repeat systems that already work

We simplify meals, packing, and routines

We’re not interested in reinventing camping every trip. We want reliable, low-effort systems that let us arrive and relax.

This blog exists because we know we’re not the only family living this way.

Our Budget Philosophy: Value Over “Cheap” or “Luxury”

We are very intentional about money.

We don’t buy the cheapest option just to save a few dollars, and we don’t assume the most expensive option is automatically better. We ask a simple question:

Is this worth the money for how we actually camp?

That means:

spending more on sleep

spending more on things we use every day

refusing to overspend on trendy gear

avoiding duplicates and gimmicks

We’d rather buy one thing that lasts and makes camping easier than five things that barely help.

On this blog, you’ll see:

honest discussions about cost

where we splurge

where we absolutely don’t

what we regret buying

Affiliate links may be present, but they’ll always be for things we use, would buy again ourselves and have researched.

What We’ve Learned the Hard Way

Our camping style wasn’t born overnight. It came from trial, error, and plenty of frustration.

We’ve learned that:

Bad sleep ruins trips faster than bad weather

Too much gear creates stress, not comfort

Campfires matter more than elaborate activities

Simple food beats complicated “camp meals”

Being realistic beats being aspirational

We’ve packed too much. We’ve packed the wrong things. We’ve chased ideas of what camping should look like instead of what actually worked for us.

This blog is about sharing those lessons so other families don’t have to repeat them.

Who This Blog Is For (And Who It’s Not)

This blog is for:

families who love camping but hate chaos

people who want comfort without guilt

busy parents who need rest

lake-loving campers

budget-aware campers who value quality

It’s probably not for:

ultralight backpackers

people who enjoy suffering “for the experience”

luxury-only RV resort travelers

gear collectors who buy things just to buy them

And that’s okay.

Camping doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.

What You’ll Find Here Going Forward

On this blog, we’ll share:

how we sleep comfortably camping

our tent and RV setups

lake-focused routines

gear that actually earns its place

what we stopped bringing and why

honest comparisons and tradeoffs

You won’t find:

perfection

staged influencer camping

“best of” lists with no context

You will find real opinions and real experiences from a family just trying to enjoy their time outside.

Why We’re Sharing This

Camping has given us some of our best family moments—but only after we stopped trying to do it “right” and started doing it our way.

If sharing what we’ve learned helps another busy family:

sleep better

relax more

stress less

and actually look forward to camping trips

…then this blog has done its job.

If you’re here because you want lake days, campfires, and a good night’s sleep—welcome. You’re in the right place.

And if you’re just getting started then check our list of 12 Family Camping Must Haves to begin your own camping experience.

Choosing the right family camping tent can make or break a camping trip. When you’re camping with kids, comfort, space, safety, and ease of setup matter just as much as durability and weather protection. A tent that’s too small, hard to pitch, or leaks during a storm can turn an exciting adventure into a stressful weekend.

This complete guide breaks down everything you need to know before buying a family camping tent—from sizing and seasonal ratings to materials, setup, pricing, and family-specific safety considerations. Whether you’re planning your first family camping trip or upgrading to a better tent, this guide will help you make a confident, informed decision.

What Defines a Family Camping Tent?

A family camping tent is designed to comfortably accommodate multiple people—typically four or more—while prioritizing livability, durability, and ease of use. Unlike backpacking tents, which focus on low weight and compact size, family camping tents are built for car camping, where space and comfort matter more than portability.

Key characteristics of family camping tents include:

Larger floor space and peak height for standing and moving around

Multiple rooms or dividers for privacy

Large doors and windows for ventilation and easy entry

Stronger poles and fabrics to handle longer stays

Simple setup systems like color-coded poles or instant frames

Family tents are designed for real-life camping—kids going in and out, gear spread across the floor, and unpredictable weather.

Tent Sizes & Capacity Explained

Tent size is one of the most misunderstood aspects of buying a family camping tent. Manufacturer capacity ratings (4-person, 6-person, 8-person) assume a tight fit with sleeping bags and no extra gear.

How to Choose the Right Size

A good rule of thumb for family camping:

Add 2 people to your actual group size

Or double the number of adults, then add kids

For example:

Family of 4 → look for a 6–8 person tent

Family of 5–6 → consider an 8–10 person tent

Floor Space & Standing Height

Look beyond capacity and check:

Floor dimensions (square footage matters more than labels)

Center height (6 ft or taller is ideal for families)

Room layouts (single large room vs multiple rooms)

Larger tents offer space for air mattresses, play areas for kids, and room to store gear during bad weather.

Seasonal Ratings: 3-Season vs 4-Season Tents

Most family camping tents fall into the 3-season category, which is ideal for spring, summer, and fall camping.

3-Season Family Camping Tents

Best for most families, these tents are designed for:

Rain and wind

Warm temperatures

Mild cold conditions

They offer good ventilation and lightweight materials while still providing weather protection.

4-Season Tents

4-season tents are built for:

Heavy snow

Strong winds

Cold temperatures

However, they’re usually:

More expensive

Heavier

Poorly ventilated for summer use

For most families, a high-quality 3-season tent is the best choice, even in Canada and the northern States.

Materials, Durability, and Waterproofing

The materials used in a family camping tent directly affect its lifespan, weather resistance, and comfort.

Tent Fabrics

Polyester – Common, UV resistant, affordable

Nylon – Lightweight and strong but can stretch when wet

Waterproof Ratings

Look for:

Rainfly with full coverage

Sealed or taped seams

Waterproof ratings of 1,500–3,000 mm for rain protection

A bathtub-style floor with raised edges helps prevent water from seeping in during storms.

Poles

Fiberglass poles – Affordable but less durable

Aluminum poles – Stronger, lighter, and more reliable

For family use, durability often matters more than weight.

Ease of Setup (A Huge Factor for Families)

When you’re setting up camp with kids around, ease of setup is critical. A complicated tent can be frustrating after a long drive or in bad weather.

Features That Make Setup Easier

Color-coded poles

Hub-style pole systems

Pre-attached poles

Instant or pop-up frames

Clear instructions and labeled components

Many modern family camping tents can be set up in 10–15 minutes by one or two adults.

Easy Setup Family Camping Tents

Price Ranges: What Should You Expect to Pay?

Family camping tents come in a wide range of prices from multiple brands. Knowing what to expect helps you balance budget and quality.

Budget ($100–$200)

Basic weather protection

Smaller floor space

Heavier materials

Best for occasional campers

Mid-Range ($200–$400)

Better waterproofing

Larger layouts and higher ceilings

More durable poles and fabrics

Ideal for most families

Premium ($400+)

Superior materials and construction

Spacious multi-room designs

Excellent ventilation and weather resistance

Best for frequent campers

For most families, mid-range tents offer the best value.

Safety & Comfort Considerations for Families

Family camping tents should prioritize more than just size.

Ventilation & Airflow

Multiple windows and mesh panels reduce condensation

Proper airflow improves sleep quality

Zippers & Doors

Smooth, durable zippers

Large doors for easy entry with kids

Interior Storage

Gear lofts and pockets keep floors clear

Reduces tripping hazards

Visibility & Supervision

Mesh panels allow parents to see kids

Dividers provide privacy without isolation

Weather Safety

Strong guy-out points

Stable pole structures

Secure rainfly attachment

Comfort and safety go hand in hand—especially on longer trips.

The Rise of Glamping Pods

Glamping has long been popular in the United Kingdom as well as other parts of Europe, but over the past five years it has been gaining tremendous momentum here in North America as well. Although there are many types of glamping accommodations, from luxury tents to cabins, one of the newest and most popular has become the camping pod or glamping pods.

As people have shifted toward adventure and wellness tourism as well as eco-tourism, the glamping market size has experienced large yearly gains. In 2018, the glamping market had a value of USD 2.1 billion. By 2025, that number is expected to rise to USD 4.7 billion according to a market analysis report completed by Grand View Research.

The reasons behind the growth are plenty. Camping as a whole has been on the rise as people look to connect with the outdoors and spend more quality time with family. The health and physical benefits of being outdoors are quite obvious, but with more people than ever living in cities, spending time outdoors in the fresh air for extended periods of time can be a challenge.

Glamping as an Alternative

While many people enjoy being outdoors in nature during the day, they may prefer to spend the night on a bed rather than the ground. Having a solid, dry location for times of bad weather such as rain or high winds is also an appealing item that glamping offers.

Glamping pods offer the best of both worlds. They provide a comfortable space to spend time when needed, keeping all of your gear safe and dry. At the same time, these pods are located in camp grounds around the world which allow you to experience nature at its core and seek all of the adventure activities you can handle throughout your stay.

So What are Glamping Pods?

Glamping pods are small wooden structures used for luxury camping accommodations. They typically are offered in sizes of approximately eight feet wide by 12 feet long, but can be custom built to suit any needs.

These pods are most often made of local wood materials and crafted by local carpenters. They can be built with many design features like verandas for extra seating space.

The use of wood as the primary building material means that they are built strong. And with the added benefit of insulation, they will stay rather warm and protect you from the elements outside.

Furthermore, glamping pods are safe. They come equipped with lockable windows and doors which provide peace of mind that your gear will remain safe, even if you are away on a daily adventure of hiking or swimming.

Glamping Pod Amenities

When you book your stay in a glamping pod, be sure to review the included amenities listed on the site or send a quick message to the host to see what’s provided. The pods might come empty, in which case you will need to bring any desired items you’ll want in order to enjoy your stay. Items such as sleeping bags and mats, cooking equipment and eating utensils along with anything else you will need.

However, many campsites will have the pod equipped with at least the basics. There might be a bed with a mattress available. There could also be a small desk or table to eat at and a BBQ outside for cooking. The campsite might also have free firewood available for your evening campfire.

Many pods are equipped with electricity and if so lighting has most likely been included. You can also bring along your laptop, charge your phone and cook on a hot plate if you desire.

Most, if not all sites, will provide some form of bathroom facilities outside of the pod and provide the basic bathroom amenities as well. What a relief!

Convenience of the Glamping Pod

Camping shouldn’t feel like a chore. The core purpose of why we go camping in the first place is to relieve stress, relax and enjoy our natural surroundings. But if the thought of setting up a tent and attempting to have your two and four year old’s sleep a full night on the ground brings more anxiety than relief, then a stay in a camping pod might be a good start or better option for your families needs.

When staying in a glamping pod, there is no setup work! Just drive up to your campsite and start enjoying your vacation immediately. There will be no tent to set up, no raking the needles away or attempting to flatten the ground underneath your sleeping area.

There is less packing! Again, no need to pack a tent or a tarp, or a whole host of other bulky items that we typically bring along in case of bad weather.

What about Winter?

The beauty of glamping is that it can be just as much fun in the winter as it is in the summer. Campgrounds might have hiking trails that become perfect for snowshoeing. Or lakes that freeze over for ice fishing. They might be near a local ski hill that you can spend the day at and return to the pod to relax for the evening.

As already mentioned, the pods are well insulated to reduce the effects of the cold and wind. Because they often come with electricity hooked up, if they are open for the winter, they will usually come with a small electric fireplace or heater provided as well. And due to their eco-friendly size, it won’t take very long to have the area toasty warm.

Where Can I Find a Glamping Pod Campsite?

As the pods become more and more popular, the places that they are provided are increasingly growing as well. Glamping has long been popular in the UK and so you’ll find the most glamping pod campsites scattered throughout England, Scotland and Ireland.

There are also plenty of locations throughout the United States and Canada. Anywhere from the Mojave Desert in California to a romantic getaway in North Carolina or even a nature adventure on the outskirts of Algonquin Park in Canada.

As the industry gains further traction, you can bet that there will be more sites added every year. Check out GlampingHub for a comprehensive list of locations as well as booking information.

There is no doubt that the idea of camping has evolved over time. As people are seeking adventure, nature, wellness and eco tourism more than ever, accommodation types have been created to suit the needs of everyone. And glamping pods are here to stay.

The post Glamping Pods: Find Out What They’re All About first appeared on Camping Zest.

The post Glamping Pods: Find Out What They’re All About appeared first on Camping Zest.

PLANNING YOUR FAMILIES FIRST CAMPING TRIP

As a young family, you’re probably looking for exciting adventures that are loads of fun for the kids and the parents alike. Taking the kids on a weekend camping trip offers all kinds of excitement for the whole family while also allowing for time to relax and enjoy each others company. If this is your first family camping trip together, you may be wondering where to start with regards to gear needed and ideas to keep everyone entertained.

Here is a list of essential items for that first family camping trip:

TENT

Of course, you will need a place to sleep for your first adventure. When choosing the right tent, the options are endless but it’s probably best to stick to the basics for your first trip. Consider what size of tent you will need based on the number of people that will be sleeping in it. A two man tent might be alright for your partner and you, but if you have children that will be joining, you will most likely need something bigger.

If you’re planning to bring along a playpen, toys and other items for children’s comfort, then you may want to consider a six or eight man tent.

These days, tents come in all sorts of sizes and styles, with options like dividing rooms easy to find. These provide a little bit of privacy and separation while spending time together in close quarters.

SLEEPING BAGS

Even while we’re camping, a large portion of the day is still spent sleeping. If we want to enjoy our days, it’s important that we still get a good night’s rest with as much comfort as possible. This will mean choosing a sleeping bag that is warm enough for the climate and provides enough comfort that we don’t wake up sore and tired.

There are many varieties of sleeping bags that offer temperature ratings for as cold as -30 degrees Celsius. While I wouldn’t suggest taking that first family camping trip in the middle of a northern winter, you should consider the climate you will be sleeping in and choose a sleeping bag to suit.

If you’re planning to camp in the summer, in most cases a standard inexpensive sleeping bag will do just fine.

When picking kids sleeping bags, there are just as many options as for adults. Keep it simple on the first trip. The kids will love having a mini sleeping bag to match mom and dads.

SLEEPING PADS

Once again, comfort is key here. If you want to make camping a yearly adventure with your family, it’s important to enjoy yourself on that first trip. Pack a sleeping pad that will provide a little bit of separation between yourself and the ground.

There are many options when considering how much cushion you will need. Do you know what the ground is like at the campsite? Is it flat or rugged?

Also, consider how much gear you want to bring with you. If you have loads of room to pack, you can bring extra blankets or an air mattress to sleep on which will ensure a comfortable sleep. If you don’t have a lot of room, a compact sleeping mat is likely your best option and there is no shortage in comfortable products.

COOK STOVE

One of the best parts of camping is enjoying the food prepared around the campsite. Whether it’s hot dogs and burgers, or steak and baked potatoes, cooking over an open flame brings out the flavors and nostalgia we’re all looking for.

Camping cook stoves are commonly fueled by propane, kerosene or butane and come in a number of sizes and configurations to suit any of your requirements. The sizes range from a small pot holder that attaches to a small propane canister, all the way to a size that would fit your whole kitchen.

Alternatively, you could option to bring along a charcoal grill or even a full size barbecue. One of the greatest new camping products I’ve seen recently is a grill with a hitch mount that attaches directly to the vehicles hitch.

You could of course choose not to bring any cooking stove along on your trip and instead rely on cooking over the open flame of a campfire. In this case, simply bring along a grill that will fit over the campfire and cook over the hot coals.

LIGHTING

You don’t want to trip on your way to the tent at the end of the evening. As we’re finding out about camping gear, we can see a common theme that our options are endless and we need to just focus on the items that work best for us.

Gas lanterns come in a variety of sizes and fuel types including propane, butane, and kerosene as well as others.

Solar lanterns have become more popular in recent years and have many added benefits. Aside from being environmentally friendly, they often have additional capabilities like phone charging ports. Of course, if solar isn’t your preferred option, battery powered lanterns are also available.

It’s a good idea to have a small, dimmable lantern inside the tent that will help children feel at ease about sleeping outside.

Bring along a flashlight or two as well as they are easily portable if you are taking a walk at night.

CAMPING CHAIRS

Don’t forget to pack a place to sit while you’re gathering around the campfire. Camping chairs come with all sorts of options like cup holders and side tables. There are single seats or couch versions that all fold down into an easily packable size.

Pick up a few inexpensive kid sized chairs and the kids will love sitting and staring at the bonfire flames late into the night.

TOYS AND GAMES

Keeping the kids entertained will ensure that both you and them have a great trip and will help get you all excited for future camping trips. Be sure to bring a few toys that they love and can play with on their own so that you can enjoy a little down time relaxing in the fresh air.

Also, make sure to bring activities that are fun for everyone and will help make lasting memories of your very first family camping trip. Things like frisbees, soccer balls and card games pack light and will keep the kids entertained for hours on end.

Why not bring out a Nature Scavenger Hunt card game that the whole family can play together, searching for pine cones and rocks among so many other items? Team up and play against each other for some family bragging rights!

Let’s remember that these camping items are for our convenience, but the real recipe to any successful family camping trip is relaxing and spending time with those that we love. This might be your first camping trip as a family, but if you let loose and enjoy this time with you children, I guarantee it won’t be your last.

We love writing about the things that make a real difference in your outdoor experience.
CAMPINGS RISING POPULARITY

Do you enjoy peace, tranquility and fresh air? Do you enjoy life in the city but can’t wait to escape for the weekend to enjoy that open air campfire….cooking a meal over an open flame and roasting marshmallows under the light of a full moon? If you answered yes to any of these questions and you haven’t yet taken a camping trip, well then what are you waiting for??! Camping has never been more popular across the board, no matter what age, sex, or race you may be, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.

With the world’s population ever growing to almost 8 billion people (that’s right…BILLION!!!) and the majority of people living in urban centers, the world has become increasingly crowded. In response, people have been on the search for a slice of untouched land where they can enjoy some much deserved quiet time and privacy.

The stresses of everyday life have been taking their toll on the population for quite some time. Did you know that some 83 percent of Americans are suffering from work related stress according to a comprehensive study completed by Everest College? Meanwhile, Everyday Health’s United States of Stress research from 2018 found that one third of respondents saw a doctor because of stress in their life. It has become abundantly clear that the more connected we become to technology, our jobs and the fast pace of life, the more stressful it has become, with stress relief outlets often hard to find.

However, connecting with the outdoors for a few days may be all the therapy that you need to regroup and refresh your mind and spirit. There is nothing quite like sleeping under the stars of a clear night….or waking up to the sounds of the birds calling.

When we are out camping, time becomes nonexistent. We are free of the burdens of our to-do lists. We can wake up early to the sounds of the loons calling. Or if we prefer, we can stay up all night under a blanket of shining stars. And if we are really ambitious, we might even do both. The choice is ours!

It is high time that we connect back to our roots in nature. Nature is our home; it’s where humans first lived among the animals and the forest. And now more than ever, we need our home.

91 MILLION AMERICAN CAMPERS

Camping’s popularity has been steadily increasing for quite some time. According to the KOA 2020 North American Camping Report, between 2018 and 2019, 2.7 million new households started camping, bringing the total number of camping households to more than 91 million.

This trend saw continued growth in 2020 due in large part to the travel restrictions imposed in response to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. As people looked for ways to safely social distance, while getting out of the house and the crowds of the cities, camping became a natural outlet.

Even when the pandemic ends, camping’s popularity is expected to continue to rise. The majority of households plan to continue taking at least one camping trip per year while 72% of campers take multiple trips per year.

In fact, campgrounds have already been booking for 2021 at unprecedented rates.

Th range of people who enjoy camping may also surprise you. In 2012 non-white camping households made up just 12 percent of camping families. By 2018, that number had risen by a whopping 17 percent to 29 percent of all campers!

The largest increase in popularity by age has been among Millennials as many have started their own families. Camping can be an inexpensive, relaxing vacation for families not looking to travel too far. It is also popular among individuals looking for adventure and to connect with the outdoors.

Camping is no longer just a way to leave the hustle and bustle of the city for a few days. It has become a way of life and a vastly important facet of both our physical and mental well being. Between 2014 and 2019, the percentage of campers who camped three or more times per year increased to 72 percent. Those that enjoy it, enjoy it a lot!

CONNECT WITH FAMILY

One of the number one reasons for taking any camping trip is to spend time with family. Often times families feel disconnected from one another even while living under the same roof. When we’re at home, there is always work to be done, chores to be completed and we don’t have time to truly connect with one another.

Camping can have a profound impact on the relationships we build with our family and friends in a place removed from the comfort of home. When we’re camping, we can let loose and enjoy our time together making amazing memories of swimming and fishing; playing horse shoes and volleyball and singing the night away around a camp fire with acoustic guitars ringing through the night.

Imagine spending the weekend away without the distractions of the outside world or the chores of the household weighing in the back of your mind. Taking three days to a week to enjoy each others company away from the distractions of everyday life can help us build relationships with our children and the memories made will last a lifetime. If you take that first camping trip this year, your kids will be begging you to make it an annual event. That, I am positive of.

MILLENNIAL CAMPERS

It may surprise you that the largest growing demographic of new campers is among millennials born between 1981 and 1996. Millennials are now at a stage in their lives where they are having their won families who they wish to travel with. They are also astutely aware of the health and physical benefits of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle. Spending the weekend rock climbing, hiking are biking while returning to the campsite for the evening has become one of this age groups favorite pastimes.

Although millennials have become known as the technology age group, they value disconnecting and spending time learning about nature first hand. They value spending time with their closest friends relaxing on the beach or kayaking along a lake or river.

Camping can be a case study in a lifestyle change that can last a lifetime and impact the decisions for future generations to come and the millennial generation is making sure to pass along this passion.

CONNECT WITH THE OUTDOORS

There is little in life more natural than a breath of fresh air. When we are frustrated, we are taught to take deep breaths in and out……in and out. This has the undeniable effect of calming our nerves and clearing our head. It allows us to reset for a moment and reflect on the things that are bothering us. If this small action can have such a great impact in a moment of frustration, what could a weekend away, breathing fresh air with every inhale do for our mind and our spirit?

Aside from the fresh air we breathe, seeing the beauty of the forest over several days in the woods is often a huge lure to start camping. Watching the birds collect sticks and straw for their nests, or a chipmunk collecting acorns for winter allows us to appreciate the little moments.

Or, maybe rather than watching as the animals explore nature, you prefer to go out exploring yourself. There are so many trees and plants to discover and learn about that it would be impossible to see them all in a lifetime. There are hills to climb and lakes to swim. The earth has given us so much beauty to explore and only so much time to do it.

The post Camping’s Rising Popularity: It’s Time to Get Outdoors first appeared on Camping Zest.

The post Camping’s Rising Popularity: It’s Time to Get Outdoors appeared first on Camping Zest.
